Piano Competition, l'émotion l'emporte

    La pianiste cubaine Marialy Pacheco a remporté mardi après-midi la finale de la Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition 2012 au Montreux Palace. Dans un Petit Théâtre comble, elle s’est imposée devant l’Ukrainien Alex Pryrodny et la Roumaine Cezara-Lucia Vl?descu. Cette dernière s’est vue décerner le Prix du Public.
    Chaque prétendant devait exécuter trois compositions : un standard de Miles Davis à choisir parmi huit, un blues et un morceau à choix. Vêtue d’une élégante robe noire, Marialy Pacheco a ouvert le bal. Malgré quelques imperfections, la prestation passionnée de la souriante Cubaine de 29 ans a séduit le jury.
    « Les trois candidats ont été très difficiles à départager », a réagi en coulisses le président du jury, le pianiste polonais Leszek Mo?d?er. « Au final, le plaisir de jouer et l’authenticité ont guidé notre décision », a-t-il poursuivi. « La joie de Marialy Pacheco a fait revenir le piano à ses vraies valeurs », a renchéri le pianiste français André Manoukian, membre du jury.
    Sur scène, la lauréate n’est pas parvenue à contenir son émotion. « Merci beaucoup, c’est incroyable ! », a-t-elle adressé aux spectateurs, avant de s’effondrer en larmes. Les yeux toujours brillants, elle a ensuite repris place au piano pour interpréter son morceau préféré devant un public amoureux.

Piano Competition:  emotion first

On Tuesday afternoon, Cuban pianist Marialy Pacheco won the final of the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition 2012 at Montreux Palace.  In a fully packed Petit Théâtre, she took first place ahead of Ukrainian Alex Pryrodny and Romanian Cezara-Lucia Vl?descu.  The latter received the Prix du Public.
Each contestant had to perform three compositions: a Miles Davis standard to choose from a selection of eight, a blues piece, and any other composition of their choice.  Wearing a smart little black dress, Marialy Pacheco opened the festivities.  Despite a few flaws, the passionate performance of the smiling 29-year-old Cuban won over the jury.
Backstage, Polish pianist and president of the jury Leszek Mo?d?er said, “Deciding between the three contenders was tough.  In the end, the contestants’ joy in performing and their authenticity guided our decision making.”  French pianist and member of the jury André Manoukian added:  “Marialy Pacheco’s joy brought the piano back to its true values.”
On stage, the laureate was unable to suppress her emotion.  “Thank you very much, this is unbelievable!” she said to the spectators before bursting into tears.  With glistening eyes, she then sat at the piano to play her favorite piece for the besotted audience.
