Tomorrow, Thursday September 19, Jerry Léonide, winner of the 2013 Montreux Jazz Parmigiani Solo Piano Competition will be performing at the MITO SettembreMusica in Milan in the project From Montreux to Milano - Jazz for solo piano, a second collaboration between MITO and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Jerry started the piano at the age of 5 with the study of classical music which did not last long. He was very early attracted to improvised music and with the help of his father who is a guitarist, he was introduced to jazz standards. Jerry ended up being self-taught for many years grabbing information from elder Mauritian musicians and playing around hotels until he decided at the age of 17 to move to Paris to study music thoroughly. He has played or arranged on 13 albums released in France in different styles. At 28 years old, Jerry 's new adventure is the Piano Solo performance. He won the 3rd prize in the famous International Jazz Piano solo competition in Montreux Switzerland where he played in front of a jury directed by Tommy LiPuma. He was nominated as a finalist in the Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition in 2012 and this summer won the 1st prize and the audience prize in the 15th International Solo Piano Competition in Montreux.
