Opening of the 51st edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival this Friday: from 30 June to 15 July, festival- goers will be able to savor 16 evenings sculpted with precision in venues boasting specific personalities. All told, there are more than 380 concerts, including 250 free events.
The stages of the Montreux Jazz Festival open tonight in emblematic fashion, highlighting the strong identity of each venue. At the Auditorium Stravinski: the surprising, and landmark, pairing with Max Richter and Nicolas Jaar. In the Montreux Jazz Club, the new generation of jazz is incarnated in Theo Croker, while File Under Zawinul promises a gripping homage. The Montreux Jazz Lab kicks off its intense exploration of electronic and independent music with Jacques and Alt-J.
Lisztomania, the latest addition to the Festival, will shine its spotlights on the Swiss artists of Magic & Naked and the pastoral melodies of Whitney. At the Strobe Klub, Bambounou and friends will keep things thumping until 5am. Music in the Park, with its new design on display for the second time, will host Junior Tshaka and Gaby Moreno, who will guarantee good vibrations.
NEW FOR THE 51ST EDITION
On July 1st, inaugural evening for the Out of the Box experience: a series of exceptional concerts at emblematic sites in the region (Abbaye de Saint-Maurice, Chillon Castle, Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, Hôtel des Trois Couronnes). The perfect showcases for a handful of artists whose talents defy categorization.
Successor to the Rock Cave, Lisztomania (capacity 500) is the Festival’s new not-to-be-missed venue. Electro, hip-hop, and rock: the program is eclectic, oriented towards discoveries and independent musical forms.
A new 150-meter-long walkway, built overhanging the lake, will make it easier to circulate on the lakefront between the Montreux Palace and the Eurotel. The total surface area built over the water has grown from 1500 to 2,400m2.
Following on the success from last year (more than 60,000 videos shared), the Festival is once again partnering with the Kudelski Group. Improved and even easier to use, the app allows users to share concert clips. With a swipe, the festival-goer captures a favorite moment by “cutting” in the stream of images produced by the Festival.
This technology will be available for more than 40 concerts this year, including May Richter and Jacques tonight. The list will be updated during the Festival (indicated by an icon on the online programme).
